Naturalising Terra Australis, #1 (2019)

Artist: Simon Alexander Cook,

Available as polyester ‘tree–curtain–flag’, stretched canvas or archival 12 colour inkjet digital print on Hahnemuhle German Etching paper 310gsm.

“ I’ve always wondered if and how the colonial colours and flag from Britain – in the canton corner of our Australian National Flag – could be naturalised if they were to truly belong to our ancient landscape. One concept is to transmute the heraldic red into ochres of orange and brown while de-colonising the naval-blue into eucalypt and turquoise greens. Overlay this on an australian woolen tartan weave and set the silhouette of kangaroos free in the top paddock. The kangaroo are gestured, casual and acknowledging an indigenous artistic tradition of portrayal, rather than as a jingoistic roadside logo of speed and armed services. The Southern Cross and Federation Star are emboldened as golden-wattle bursts in an arid, seasonal rural tapestry…”
